A vargabéles viszont ... na arról ódákat lehetne zengeni. :)

We visited the place with a group of family members. Booked in advance as we expected it to be a busy day. The place is big, but as expected was very busy. So book in advance! The staff generally felt misorganized, they did not know if we had been asked about drinks or not and so on... How the orders were taken we generally "felt guilty" of being there and creating work for waiters. :) No kind words, you have to generally ask for everything multiple times. Explanations about food was exact, brief but slightly rude. The theme of the restaurant was nice.
On the bright side the food was tasty and plenty. Creative middle age menu. We had lamb, chicken duck all was good.
So all in all good food, rude service. Kinda gives you average experience.

Take time to travel to this beautiful region of Hungary and travel back in time with the castles wonderful guides and shows. The staff are in character and interact beautifully with everyone. I can't recall seeing so many couples and families dining, laughing , and smiling together. I have visited many castles, but I will return here. The castle estate is as a park blanketing its radius; beyond the estate are orchards and vineyards that compliment its regal stature. from the castle you may observe the wildlife- deer, fox, pheasant,...bring your camera and binoculars. Don't leave too quickly or you will miss one of the most spectacular sunsets you will ever have a chance to see. I'm very grateful to all the fine staff that made this experience possible.

During our visit to Boldogko vara, a medieval castle, we were pleasantly surprised to bump into this amazing restaurant at the foot of the castle. It is part of the castle's original basement system of course with added modernization. Inside the concrete walls, flags, armours, coat-of-arms and swords hang on the wall, the menu itself, the drinking clay mugs, wooden plates, the huge candles and the waitresses dressed as wenches seemed truly authentic. The food was outstanding and plenty. We took a tour of the castle after our lunch, what a scenery! This place is a hidden gem in the northeast part of Hungary.

A lot of food for very good price, staff is very nice and speak various languages. You can also reserve a dinner from other country :) You can do a pictures of you and your friends in armor with axes, swords and helms... while waiting for food. Every person has own medieval clothes.

After touring the Boldogkő castle, we spent the rest of the afternoon in the Castrum Boldua Étterem, a medieval-themed restaurant. This unique eatery is located in a carved-out cavern, just under the well-known Boldogkő vára [Happy Castle Rock in English], outside the village of Boldogkőváralja in northeastern Hungary. Our experience there was like eating a meal in a medieval castle. To get into the restaurant, you enter a cavern that is carved into the hillside underneath the castle, and you’re instantly transported back to medieval times.
When we arrived, we were quickly ushered past the bar and to a wooden bench table, and each of us was presented with a red squire’s tunic to put on over our clothes. Our tunics were tied with rope belts. A server then brought over a towel and a crock of warm water with fresh lemons floating on top so we could wash our hands. Our server did speak some English, so North Americans could dine here without knowing any Hungarian.
To our surprise, to the side of our table we found barrels filled with iron helmets, swords, and shield to “play” with…which, we immediately proceeded to investigate! My 6 ft 4 in cousin engaged in mock combat with an “enemy” from Slovakia, who was sitting at the next table. We had a great time!
The menu in Hungarian is hand-printed in old-fashioned script, whereas the English version is a computer booklet. Treasuring our Hungarian heritage due to a recent visit with family members, we all opted to start our meal with apricot Pálinka, a traditional Hungarian fruit brandy that is served at special family events, and is used for toasting guests.
After our Pálinka toast, our soup course came next, served in ceramic bowls on wooden plates, and eaten with wooden spoons! Each of us tried something different…chicken soup with csiga noodles, ploughman’s special, venison soup, beer soup, and bean soup with cabbage. All were very excellent. We also ordered a pitcher full of the traditional syrup drink, which is fruit-flavored sugar syrup mixed with seltzer water. It was quite refreshing.
On advice of the server, we then ordered a special main-course platter for the five of us that included a whole roasted duck, a whole roasted chicken, a smoked ham knuckle, cooked red cabbage, a carrot sauerkraut, polenta layered with goat cheese, spiced pickles, broiled potatoes, and I few other items I can’t remember. This was a feast for five that was fantastic! All of the food was eaten with our fingers or with the wooden spoons…a mock medieval feast. No forks or knives allowed! We also ordered a bottle of Egri Merlot red wine and a bottle of Furmint white wine to have with our meal, and found them to be quite good.
For dessert, we ordered the Favourite Dessert of Princess Kinga, which turned out to be a meringue and fruit concoction; sweet, yet tangy, and yummy. With dessert, we each had a glass of the legendary sweet Tokaj wine in honor of our Hungarian ancestors. Who knows…maybe one of them fought at this castle sometime in past centuries!
When we finished, every one of us felt very satisfied with our meal at this theme restaurant. After our chilly and interesting tour of the castle, this meal was a treat, and a wonderful way to cap off our adventurous day. The food was really good and the drinks were fine. Although the weather was cold and crisp in the countryside of Hungary, inside the restaurant, we were warm and cozy. We truly enjoyed the food and fellowship.
The only negative point we could find was with the smoky atmosphere of the whole restaurant. This was not due to cigarette smoke at all, but to how the meat in the restaurant was being cooked on an open-fire rotisserie. If you have respiratory problems, you might find this a problem. However, I do suffer from mild asthma, and for some reason, the smoke was not a problem for me that day. It was not possible to determine if this smoke was an everyday occurrence or a particular problem on that particular day.
Although the staff did speak some English, we were glad that my aunt speaks Hungarian, and that our Hungarian cousin was with us. The meal we ordered was not on the menu, and my cousin was able to talk to the servers and arrange to get this special platter for us.
The English-language website for the restaurant is found at: http://castrumboldua.extra.hu/en/index.php?oldal=rolunk . You would be wise to make reservations if you can, as the restaurant was practically full when we were there on a Saturday afternoon in early March. It probably becomes very busy during the height of tourist season. The total bill for each person in our party was approximately 5500 forint, or $23.00 US/Canadian, which included all drinks and the tip. What a deal, complete with memories we won’t forget!

If yes, then visit this restaurant in underground of castle Boldogkő and enjoy eating specialites by you hands. The food is perfect and aura very pleasant. Try to use old swords to dub, helmets or axe to gentle fight.
